I hope you are as excited as I am about all the fun things Columbus Public Library has planned for its patrons this summer!

As the adult summer reading program organizer, I want to share with you all the wonderful events we have planned. Below is a list of all the fun stuff we have in store for you to start our adult summer reading program – “A Universe of Stories." The “adult” programs are for all family members and all ages. Being registered for the summer reading program is not required but beneficial to you. For example: you will find a coupon for a free book from the Friends of the Library book sales in your registration packet, along with other freebies. At the front desk in the library is a table where you can register for the adult program. You put your registration slip in the jar for the $25 gift certificate to Pizza Ranch. Then you take a summer reading packet filled with information, freebies, and reading logs. Read two books for each reading log, then turn in the reading log for an immediate prize. The reading log is then placed in a box for the larger prizes of a tote filled with goodies or the grand prize of the android tablet.

At 2 p.m. June 29, the library will host Civil War Music by David Marsh from Humanities Nebraska. He brings the Civil War to life with songs and stories. Come hear songs like “Dear Old Dixie” and other old favorites.

At 2 p.m. July 13, we welcome the ever-popular Daniel Christian. A well-known guitar player, Daniel is coming to our library for an afternoon of stories and songs. This is made possible through the support of Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural endowment.

At 2 p.m. July 27, the library hosts the Underground Railroad with Bill Hayes, through Humanities Nebraska. He describes the overall history of the Underground Railroad and especially how Nebraska is connected, showing specific sites where escaping slaves found refuge.

At 2 p.m. Aug. 3, plan on Veterans Conservation Corps. Come hear the history behind the VCC camp of Platte County as told by Randy Perault. The VCC boys were comprised of veterans of the Spanish American and WWI wars.

Aug. 3 all day long is the end of Summer Reading Cookie Party!

And this is just the adult programming! More fun for teens and children! So sign up for summer reading and receive reading prizes, enter drawings, and attend “out of this world” programs! You will receive an event calendar for each age level. Eighteen year olds and up can enter our adult short story contest. Entries need to be in by July 1. Stories can be 1 – 20 pages long. The winning story will be published in the library newsletter and rewarded a $50 amazon gift card. Second place story earns a $35 amazon gift card and third place a $20 Amazon gift card. Any genre is accepted. Email your story to kkeyes@columbusne.us or hand to a librarian. Be creative and have fun this summer!

Kelli Keyes is the customer service manager at Columbus Public Library.
