Young runners pound pavement at annual event

  • 0

COLUMBUS — As they waited at the starting line, some were stretching out their leg muscles, others were making sure their socks were pulled up high and sneakers were laced tight.

At the sound of a siren, the approximately 100 children taking part in the 24th annual Kids Run were off, testing their endurance along the mile-long course Friday evening in Pawnee Park.

The event was for children up to 12 years old, although adults were allowed to tag alongside to offer encouragement to the young racers. The race is held in conjunction with the Columbus Downtown Runaround.

Athletes finished their run by taking a lap around Pawnee Park's Memorial Stadium, where they were greeted with cheers, clapping and a few high-fives.

After crossing the finish line of the timed race, they were given water to hydrate and prizes for their efforts.
