My dad, Loren Fraser, was buried at the Columbus Cemetery on Feb. 11. We wanted to have his burial on Saturday, Feb. 9, but a policy the burials must be completed by noon on Saturdays made that impossible. The funeral was Saturday morning in Elkhorn, where Dad lived since 2013. I offered to pay extra to have the burial on Saturday, but was denied. So, because of a policy, my son was not able to attend his grandfather’s burial, and my brother and his family were not able to attend.
I was told the reason for the policy is that the staff is made up of older workers, and they didn’t want to inconvenience them by having them work late on weekends. The manager of the cemetery had no problem with a 2 p.m. burial, but Doug Moore said no. We will have no more need for burials in Columbus, my hometown from 1964–1981…but I encourage you, as citizens of Columbus to urge your leadership to change this policy…it has, and will continue to negatively impact other families.
