To the editor:
It will soon be up to the Public Service Commission to approve or deny the permit for the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. If built, this pipeline would transport some of the most toxic and polluting oil through our state for export, putting our water supplies at risk of devastating spills and polluting our climate.
There is no reason for Nebraskans to bear all the risk of building this dangerous, polluting pipeline for the benefit of a foreign oil company. Developing Nebraska’s own energy economy is a far better investment.
Nebraska ranks fourth among all states for wind energy potential. Not only would it be better for our environment to invest in clean wind energy rather than building Keystone XL, it would also be better for our wallets. Unlike Keystone XL, when wind turbines are built in Nebraska they provide annual payments to landowners and pay local property taxes throughout the lifespan of the turbine, not just for the first few years.
We should say no to foreign oil for corporate gain, and yes to developing clean, Nebraska-based energy.
