Dolores Roubal

Dolores (Dorothy) (Skarda) Roubal, 90, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2018.

Her life spanned the Great Depression, which guided many of her principles, to work hard and never waste anything.

Memorial services were held at St. Isodore’s Church in Columbus at 10:30 a.m. April 20, with Fr. Joseph Miksch officiating. Visitation was held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Isodore’s or Columbus Public Library.

Dorothy grew up on a farm north of Schuyler. She graduated from Schuyler High School and then spent time in Omaha, working at Mutual of Omaha. She met an ambitious Czech from Howells, Frank Roubal, and they bought a farm in the Shell Creek district of Colfax County.

Together, they became successful farmers and raised crops, livestock and two daughters. She was an accomplished seamstress and sewed most of her daughters’ clothes. Dorothy grew a huge vegetable garden and made kolaches and other delicious baked goods.

When she and Frank retired from farming in 1974 and moved to Columbus, they continued the gardening, dedicating the entire backyard to a rotation of vegetables. Dorothy also babysat since she was never one to sit around idle, and she saw many of her watched children grow up over the years, some still returning to visit her on the holidays.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Roubal who died in 2000, her parents, Frank and Ida (Cada) Skarda; and brother Frank Skarda. She is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Roubal of Schuyler and Jane (Roubal) Bachmann of Chicago. Dorothy has three grandsons, Charles Kohler, Portland; Ryan (Kathy) Kohler, Lincoln; and Matthew Bachmann, Brooklyn. She has three wonderful great-granddaughters in Lincoln: Grace, Ally and Olivia Kohler.

Dorothy never liked funerals, so she donated her body to the Anatomical Board in Omaha to benefit Creighton University medical students’ research.
