NIOBRARA — A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul Stark, 86, of Niobrara, was held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre with the Rev. Francis Ekere as celebrant and burial in L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery in Niobrara.
Military honors were provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4834, American Legion Post 224 and the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard. Brockhaus Funeral Home of Niobrara was is in charge of arrangements.
Paul died Saturday, June 17, 2017, at his residence.
Paul Francis Stark, son of Regina Cecilia (Kneifl) and Julius J. Stark, was born March 25, 1931, at the farm home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Kneifl, in Newcastle. He was baptized at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Newcastle on April 12, 1931. Paul attended Newcastle Public School and Trinity School in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Newcastle High School. Paul volunteered to serve as a weather observer on the frontline in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. On June 2, 1954, Paul was united in marriage to Marian Watts at Chapel Two, Lowry AFB, in Denver, Colorado. They were blessed with 11 children, Steven, Susan, Loretta, Kevin, Patricia, Mary Angela, Karen, Ruth, Brian, Bruce and Brenda.
Paul lived in various places throughout his lifetime, including Newcastle, Sioux City, Schuyler and Niobrara. He was a farmer, Schwann’s salesman and owned Paul’s General Store in Center. Paul was also a truck driver for Silvey and Alumax and later retired from trucking after 19 years.
He was a member of St. William’s Catholic Church in Niobrara and Knights of Columbus and a Niobrara school board member. Paul was also a member of the Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He liked to help his family and friends out whenever possible. He loved to haul “sunshine” for his son-in-law. Paul enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all family members. He loved to visit and no one was a stranger. Most of all he really enjoyed nature, cutting wood, walks and picnics with his family.
Paul is survived by his children, Susan Zrust of Crofton, Loretta (Dan) Zelasney of Niobrara, Kevin (Mavis) Stark of Hershey, Patricia Stark of Verdigre, Karen Marshall of Stanton, Ruth (Randy) Bathke of Niobrara, Brian (Niela) Stark of Niobrara, Bruce (Jill) Stark of Niobrara and Brenda (Tony) Petersen of Bloomfield; 26 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Darlene Handrick of Ralston, Harold (Sue) Stark of Newcastle and Rose (Jim) Munson of Sioux City, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian; son, Steven Stark; daughter, Mary Angela Stark; parents, Julius “Dub” and Regina Stark; grandparents; brother, Raymond Stark; son-in-law, Ron Marshall; nephew, Doug Stark; and in-laws, Diane Stark, Todd Handrick, Gary Nelson, Vernon Wilhite, Frances Kahler, Fern Curless and Jim Dailey.
