Fresh off their win over Douglas County West on Thursday, the Schuyler Central Lady Warriors squared off last Friday night against the Crete Lady Cardinals in Schuyler. Crete scored the first 13 points of the game, outscored the Lady Warriors 28-2 in the first quarter, and raced to a 66-20 victory for their 12th victory of the season while Schuyler fell to 2-17.
The Lady Warriors had a difficult time breaking Crete’s full court press from the outset and the Lady Cardinals offense excelled both in the paint and outside the arc to break the game open early.
Crete’s Ellie Allen hit a driving layup to put the Lady Cardinals ahead 13-0 with 4:01 left in the first period before Schuyler finally hit the scoring column on a layup by Rachel Shonka making it 13-2. Shonka had another solid game for the Lady Warriors pouring in 11 points on three field goals and a 5-6 effort from the free throw lane. Three Crete players hit double figures led by Morgan Maly with 19, Camry Moore with 15, and Ellie Allen with 10.
Crete scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to go up 40-2 with 5:22 to go in the first half. From then until the halftime buzzer the Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Cardinals 9-8 as Crete went to its bench to give the starters a rest. Shonka hit for seven points during the stretch while Jakelin Mejia hit a pair of free throws bringing Schuyler to within 48-11 at the break.
The Lady Cardinals outscored Schuyler 18-9 in the second half with reserves seeing much of the action for the visitors. The 40-point running clock rule went into effect at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter when Maly hit a short jump shot making the score 53-11 in favor of Crete.
In addition to Shonka’s scoring effort the Lady Warriors had three players score three points each in the contest. They were Haylee Korth, Jakelin Mejia, and Tasha Wolken.
The Lady Warriors have two home games this week. They face the Ralston Lady Rams on Thursday night before squaring off against the Fairbury Lady Jeffs on Friday night.
