Schuyler’s cross country teams continued to heat up the courses last week as the boys raced to a second-place finish among 17 teams Sept. 19 at the Malcolm Invite before taking third in the large-school division Sept. 21 at the North Bend Invite.

The Warriors girls were ninth among 12 teams in Malcolm and fifth out of six teams in North Bend.

Schuyler placed four runners in the top 10 at the Malcolm Invite.

Nesrudin Yusuf led the group by taking second with a time of 17 minutes, 47.50 seconds, just six seconds behind champion Aiden Wheelock of Minden.

“Nesrudin would have probably won the race if it were a mile longer,” Schuyler head coach Rick Carter said. “At the halfway point he was probably 20 to 30 seconds behind. At the finish he had closed the gap to six seconds.”

Schuyler’s Miguel Carrasco took home the fifth-place medal with a time of 17:55.98, followed by Cristobal Gonzalez in eighth place in 18:05.57.

“Miguel has really been coming on strong as the season has progressed. Cristobal Gonzalez ran another great race, finishing only 10 seconds behind Miguel. To have three runners right there at the end is a huge accomplishment for any team,” Carter said.

Hugo Ramon crossed in 22nd place with a time of 19:38.30 to round out Schuyler’s team score in the boys race.

“The Malcolm results were probably our best ever,” Carter said.

In the girls race, Schuyler’s Edith Oliden continued her string of top-10 finishes, crossing in ninth place with a time of 22:52. The other contributors to Schuyler’s team score were Yessica Rodriguez in 46th place (26:47.85), Crystal Carrillo in 58th place (29:28.20) and Roxana Galdamez in 64th place (30:50.80).

At North Bend, Elkhorn won the boys team title with 27 points while Gretna finished second with 32 points and Schuyler was third with 46 points.

Yusuf was once again the top Warrior runner, finishing in fourth place with a time of 18:06.50. Justin Karstetter of Elkhorn outran the field to capture the first-place medal with a time of 17:23.62.

Carrasco finished in seventh place for SCHS with a time of 18:12.69 and Gonzalez was 15th in 18:44.82. Ramon came in 20th in 19:39.83.

“Nesrudin and Miguel both ran excellent races, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively,” Carter said. “As a team, I was very pleased with our third-place finish behind two very good teams in Elkhorn and Gretna. We are continuing to improve at each meet and that is what it’s all about.”

Oliden posted her best finish of the season for the SCHS girls, taking fourth place in 22:22.11. Elkhorn’s Hannah Pollan and Maddie Yardley took first and second, respectively, and Bishop Neumann’s Faith Polacek was third.

Rodriguez was 25th for Schuyler in 26:54.72, Astrid Mejia came in 31st in 29:45.57 and Iliana Hernandez finished 32nd in 29:53.49.

The Schuyler cross country teams compete Thursday in the Raymond Central Invite.
