Lakeview golf is preparing for the final stretch of the regular season. With the conference tournament coming up on May 2 and the district tournament taking place May 14, the Vikings felt the need to solidify their varsity roster.
On Tuesday, Lakeview decided to put the fifth varsity spot on the line for Bradyn Kucera, Mason Hinze and Austen Smith who have been fighting for varsity time all season.
Head coach Alex Heard told the three golfers that whoever had the lowest score at the Boone Central Invite would secure the final spot.
It was an extremely close competition that came down to one stroke. Kucera had that one stroke with a final score of 99 earning him a varsity position.
Hinze carded a 100 and Smith finished with a 101.
"He had a nice round," Heard said. "He's starting to put some things together for us. That was really positive, something that we were looking for from him. He started out the year on varsity and then he struggled.
"I think it was just kind of nerves out of the gate. He's come on strong and put a lot of work in. It's good to see him shoot that 99 yesterday and grab that fifth spot."
