Cross County boys basketball held McCool Junction under 10 points in each of the first two quarters and pulled away early for a 53-39 season-opening win on Thursday night.
The Cougars led 10-6 then 26-13 at halftime. It was a 10-point separation after three before the Mustangs were forced to foul.

Cael Lundstrom and Cory Hollinger led Cross County with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Lundstrom sank 6 of 6 foul shots in the fourth quarter while Hollinger went 3 of 5 and had half of his total over the final eight minutes.
As a team, the Cougars went 20 of 26 from the charity stripe. Lundstrom also sank three 3-pointers, all in the first half, as Cross County opened 1-0 ahead of a game Friday night at Shelby-Rising City.
