On Thursday at Memorial Field in Norfolk, Columbus High School defeated the host Panthers in a baseball twinbill, coming out winners in both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 6-4.
In the opener, senior Logan Mueller went 3-for-3, while Trevor Kaslon was 2-for-3, each with a run batted in.
Jared Nitz and Jacob Morse also chased home runs for the Discoverers, while Nathan Slusarski was dealing on the mound, going the distance with seven strong innings of work, allowing only six hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Most of the damage was done by the visitors in the top of the fourth, when the Discoverers plated three runs before adding another in the sixth.
Norfolk got its lone run in the home half of the seventh, preventing Slusarski from posting the shutout.
Columbus 6, Norfolk 4
In the nightcap, Columbus could muster only seven hits, but got the maximum from the minimum, scoring six runs in the process during a 6-4 victory.
Tyler Palmer and Kaslon led the way with a pair of hits each on the game, while Nitz drove in a pair of runs.
Columbus jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage in the top of the first, before the Panthers pulled a run back in the bottom half of the frame.
After the Discoverers had tacked on another marker in the top of the fourth, the home side responded with a pair of its own, reducing the CHS lead to 4-3.
However, single runs in the Columbus fifth and sixth innings provided enough of a cushion to weather a last stand by Norfolk, who plated one more in the bottom of the sixth.
Morse (six innings) and Kaslon (one) combined to limit the home team to only a pair of earned runs.
Columbus (7-2) was scheduled to face Seward in a road game on Saturday, which has been postponed due to weather and is now scheduled to host Omaha South at Pawnee Park on Monday at 5 p.m.
