Scotus Central Catholic volleyball was one set away from making it eight victories in a row and handing rival David City Aquinas another defeat in a long recent run of Shamrock dominance but the combination of Micaiah Vrbka and Kloe Ruth finally earned the Monarchs a victory in the series and turned away Scotus in a 3-2 come-from-behind match that’s sure to go down as an instant classic – at least for one participant.
The Monarchs earned a 28-30, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-4 improving to 6-3 and dropping the No. 7 Shamrocks to 9-3.
Vrbka and Ruth totaled 26 kills together, splitting it evenly down the middle 13-13, to lead an Aquinas effort that outhit Scotus 52-41 in total kills.
Shamrock Bailey Lehr piled up a match-high 17 kills but no other teammate finished in double digits. In addition to Vrbka and Ruth, Natalie Semin had 10 and Larissa Sellers was one away at nine kills for the Monarchs.
They actually dictated the action early and led 13-5 in the first set until Scotus setter Chloe Odbert rotated into the front row and the Shamrocks found their rhythm. They still had to fight off four set points but eventually battled to a 30-28 set win.
After a 25-20 win in the second set, Aquinas answered back in the third then began to take firm control the rest of the way.
The Monarchs enjoyed a 22-8 lead in the fourth before a mini ‘Rocks comeback ended with a 25-17 final score. Aquinas took a 14-1 lead in the fifth before ending the match with a 15-4 set win.
