Local teams Columbus High, Lakeview, Scotus Central Catholic, High Plains and Twin River were in action Friday at the Nebraska Duals hosted at Central Community College-Columbus.
The event, which features 16 teams from mostly Nebraska but also Iowa and Kansas, is completed over two days in a dual format with teams separated into two pools.
Columbus opened Day 1 perfect with three dominant victories while Lakeview went 4-1, Scotus was 2-1, High Plains finished 0-5 and Twin River was 1-2.
Action begins again at 9 a.m. Saturday with eight more rounds of dual wrestling.
Lakeview begins against Cozad. Columbus follows against Twin River while Scotus faces Gothenburg and High Plains matches up with David City also in the 10th round.
The Discoverers, ranked No. 2 in Class A to begin the season by NEwrestle.com, made quick work of all four Friday opponents, defeating Overland Park-Blue Valley West 71-6, taking down Shelby-Rising City 81-0, beating Gothenburg 77-0 and Elkhorn South 63-6.
CHS lost just three matches all day, wrestled a total of 56 matches and scored bonus points with pins, technical falls or major decisions in 35 of those.
Lakeview was nearly as dominant with a 48-22 win over Norfolk, a 48-33 victory over O'Neill, 81-0 shutout of High Plains, 38-32 win over David City and a close 31-30 loss to Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic.
Bishop Heelan led 24-6 before wins by Kevin Dominguez and Lucien Engel cut it to 24-12, Gage Perry came up with a pin to make it 24-18 and Logan Jaixen pinned his opponent to tie it up.
Heelan took the next two by decision but Lucas Thatcher won by a pin in the final match tying it 30-30. Tiebreaker criteria gave Heelan the one-point win.
The Vikings trailed David City 11-0 before a win, pin and forfeit gave Lakeview a 15-11 lead. Two David City pins and a decision put the Scouts back ahead 26-15 before Hayden Johnson, Dominguez, Engel and Perry came through with a win, two pins and a major decision. Up 34-26, David City won by pin at 132 to cut the lead to two but Joel Lemburg put it away with an 8-0 major decision.
Scotus defeated Shelby-Rising City 65-18, lost to Elkhorn South 49-24 and took down Tekamah-Herman 61-18.
High Plains was beaten by Malcolm 43-24, lost to Cozad 48-18, lost to Lakeview in the 81-0 shutout, dropped a dual to Heelan 69-11 and fell to O'Neill 51-24.
Twin River lost to Gothenburg 45-34, to Overland Park-Blue Valley West 68-12 and defeated Shelby-Rising City 48-30.
