COLUMBUS — Scotus Central Catholic had a night to remember Thursday at the Lakeview triangular.

The Shamrock wrestlers manhandled their opponents, winning 24 of 28 matches during duals against Lakeview and Boone Central/Newman Grove.

“We’re going to count our blessings right now. I thought we wrestled good, but it wasn’t always pretty,” Scotus head coach Tracy Dodson said. “These are big matches for us with them being district opponents. I thought we showed some good things, but there is always room for improvement.”

Scotus capped the night with a resounding 56-15 win over short-handed Lakeview, which gave up 30 points with five forfeits.

The Shamrocks won six of the nine contested matches, with Class B, No. 3 Layton Mullinix’s 9-3 victory over returning state qualifier Drew Schaad highlighting the dual win for Scotus.

Lakeview closed the dual with three straight wins at 120 (Joel Lemburg), 126 (Gage Perry) and 132 pounds (Alex Ernst).

“Lakeview was down some guys. They're a tough team and they’ve had some tough injuries, but I thought we competed hard,” Dodson said. “Landon Sokol had a good matchup with Lakeview’s heavyweight (Cody Thompson) and I thought he came out and did a great job getting a fall over a solid opponent.”

Lakeview head coach Jeff Bargen thought his team performed much better than the final score indicated, with a total of four wrestlers out because of injury or other reasons.

“It was good to come out of there with three wins to end the dual. I told the guys not to worry about the scoreboard, just go out and wrestle. I thought we did a good job of controlling what we can control,” Bargen said. “I thought we could of possibly won at 152 pounds (Zeth Gerkensmeyer) and heavyweight (Thompson), but we battled and there are some good things to take away from the dual against Scotus tonight.”

Scotus won its first dual of the night 68-6 against Boone Central/Newman Grove, with the Shamrocks claiming every contested match. Their lone loss was a forfeit at 195 pounds, where Matt Hoenk is out with a shoulder injury.

Scotus' Dillon Muchmore earned his 100th career victory with a fall over Trey Schafer in 2 minutes, 55 seconds.

Second-ranked Wyatt Gutzmer (220 pounds), Wren Allen (182), Chase Newman (170), Muchmore (160), Mullinix (145) and Jacob Weyers (113) accounted for the Shamrocks' six falls in the dominant dual win.

Sophomores Daniel Tworek (106 pounds) and Colby Gilson (113) each won their matches by decision, with Gilson picking up a 5-3 win over Tyson Haddix in the closest match of the dual.

Gilson used his go-to move, the spladle, to get a much-needed three-point near fall and hang on for the win.

In the first dual of the event, Lakeview and Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestled only six matches as the Cardinals forfeited at three weight classes and the Vikings gave up five weights.

Boone Central/Newman Grove took advantage of the 12-point cushion to start the dual and hung on for a narrow 39-36 victory.

Lakeview won four of the six contested matches.

“It just wasn’t quite enough," Bargen said. "We played the hand we were dealt. I thought the kids wrestled pretty hard. It came down to bonus points again and it didn’t work out in our favor."

Schaad earned a solid 3-0 win over Ethan Dozler, who beat Schaad twice earlier in the season.

Boston Barcel (138 pounds), Lemburg (120) and Brook Behlen (170) picked up the other victories for Lakeview, with Barcel and Lemburg securing pins and Behlen winning 7-2.

Garrett Cornwell (152 pounds) and Ryan Thiem (182) were winners for Boone Central/Newman Grove. Cornwell took a 7-2 decision against Gerkensmeyer and Thiem defeated Blake Langmack by fall in 4:37.

Lakeview wrestles Friday at the Raymond Central Invite, Scotus heads to the Omaha Skutt Invite on Saturday and Boone Central/Newman Grove hosts its home invite on Saturday.
