COLUMBUS — It isn’t every day that a Husker legend visits Columbus, but thanks to the Lakeview Education Foundation, it’s happening.
Former Nebraska defensive coordinator Charlie McBride will be the featured speaker at the Lakeview Education Foundation’s Big Red Night July 20 at New World Inn and Conference Center.
Tickets for the event are $35 each and include a meal and one free drink, and attire is casual. The doors open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
The foundation has sponsored a golf tournament for the past several years, but wanted to try something new this year. When one of the current board members mentioned connections to McBride, Big Red Night was planned.
“We’ve been doing fundraisers for years, but this is something new and different,” Lakeview Education Foundation President Jill Goedeken said. “We thought it was time for a change.”
McBride served as an assistant coach for Nebraska from 1977-99, including an 18-year run as the defensive coordinator at the end of his career.
During his time as defensive coordinator, Nebraska was ranked in the top 10 in total defense 11 times. His most successful year was 1984, when the Huskers had the top defensive unit in the country.
In addition to the dinner, Big Red Night will feature a silent auction and a live auction. The silent auction will begin when the doors open, and the live auction will take place after the dinner and McBride’s speech.

Auction items include tickets to Nebraska football games, a Craftsman riding lawnmower, agricultural items, numerous gift certificates and other items.
Proceeds from the event go to the Lakeview Education Foundation, which provides scholarships to graduating seniors from LHS. Goedeken said a major goal of Big Red Night is to help the foundation provide scholarships to more students.
“We’re trying to improve that program,” she said. “We’d like to do more. That’s our goal.”
Tickets may be purchased at Lakeview High School, Lake Stop, Corner Stop, both branches of Columbus Bank and Pinnacle Bank, Bank of the Valley in Platte Center, Alice’s in Creston or from any Lakeview Foundation board member.
Tickets to Big Red Night must be purchased prior to July 13.
“We’re hoping everybody comes out and supports the Lakeview Education Foundation and its goal,” Goedeken said. “We are hoping it becomes an event alumni can come to, as well as members of the entire community.”
