This week we feature the Friday Westward Ho League from Westbrook Lanes.

This four-person, five-team league bowls 34 weeks. The league is divided into 17 week halves, with the league champion being determined by the team with the best overall record from the winners of each half.

Eight weeks into the second half, the VIPS sit in first with a 25-7 record. John Atkins, Shirley Wagner, Elaine Liekhus and Gene Zeilinger make up the VIPS. The winner of the second half will be matched up against the Strikers, winners of the first half. Dave Smith, Marv Shalon, Carroll Enzminger and Dennis Smith are the regulars for the Strikers. Ron Cattau, June Souders, Don Gablenz and Jim Skalak are the four main bowlers for the defending champions, the Tagalongs.

The Tagalongs hold both the high team game and series with a 792 and a 2,252. On the individual side for the men, Gary Muth holds all three of the top scores. He has the high game with a 278, high series with a 709 and high average with a 198. For the ladies, Liekhus has the high series with a 535. June Everhart has the high game with a 206 and high average with a 150. High average is based on bowling 50 percent of the league games.

During league play on Feb. 16, the Pioneers shot the high team game with a 694. The pioneers had to use a straw, as they only had three bowlers. Muth, Jerry Schmidt and Ron Schmidt were the three bowlers. The high team series for the afternoon was a 1,958 by the Tagalongs. Gene Zeilinger rolled the high game for the men with a 235, which was 70 pins over his average. Muth’s 575 series was tops for the men. Everhart led the ladies with a 186 game and 486 series. She was 36 pins over her average with her high game.

Four other bowlers shot games that were at least 30 over their averages. Jerry Schmidt was 51 pins over with a 195 and Ron Schmidt's 204 was 49 pins above. Cattau was 40 pins to the good with a 198, while Gablenz’s 196 was 34 pins on the positive side. Nice bowling to one and all.
