Local high school runners are off as the 2018 boys and girls high school cross country seasons is underway.
Teams started official practice on Monday and will need to get ready quickly, as the first races are just around the corner.
Columbus, Scouts Central Catholic High School and Lakeview will have a chance to size up the local competition early on in the season. The first race for all three teams will compete in a four-team competition hosted by Schuyler. The quad takes place Aug. at Schuyler Golf Course.
The Schuyler Quad isn't the only meet that local teams will face off. All three Columbus teams will see each other again on Aug 31. at the Boone Central/Newman Grove Invitational.
The Vikings and Shamrocks will become familiar with each other as they face off two more times throughout the regular season.
They will both be present at the Wahoo Invitational on Sept. 6 and on Sept. 27 they will both run in the Aquinas Catholic Invitational.
All three teams had runners make it to the state meet in 2017.
Last season the Discoverer boys finished second at districts and qualified for the state meet where the finished ninth. The girls finished fifth at the district meet.
Like Columbus, Lakeview also had some athletes run in the state meet. From the girls' team, Alison Loseke and Makenna Frenzen qualified for state individually placing 29th and 59th respectively, and Luis Neave placed 11th at state for the boys.
The Shamrocks weren't going to be left out of the state meet either. The girls' team was runner-up at districts and placed fourth in the state meet. The boys' team finished fifth at districts. Elliott Thomazin qualified for state and placed 28th.
