Butler and Colfax County 4-H youth recently had the opportunity to experience photography from a whole new perspective during a Pinhole Photography Workshop.
National Geographic photographer RJ Kern leads a pinhole photography workshop at the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City.
The workshop was led by renowned National Geographic photographer RJ Kern at the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art in David City.
Participants combined creativity with science as they learned the principles behind pinhole photography, constructed their own pinhole cameras, and captured unique images using this historic photographic process.
The workshop provided an engaging, hands-on learning experience that encouraged curiosity, artistic expression, and problem-solving while introducing youth to the fundamentals of photography.
During the Portraits at the Fairgrounds photography sessions, RJ Kern photographed Butler and Colfax County 4-H youth alongside their animal. Kern is a photographer for National Geographic.
In addition to the workshop, Butler County 4-H members Tenley Kocian, Kate Janak, Henry Weverka and Allison Weverka, along with Colfax County 4-H member Hallie Hopkins, participated in the Portraits at the Fairgrounds photography sessions with their livestock.

During the sessions, Kern photographed each youth alongside their animal, creating portraits that celebrate the unique bond between 4-H members and the animals they have dedicated countless hours to raising and caring for.

The pinhole photography workshop was made possible through support of community sponsors, including BigIron, CVA Coop–Rising City, Faltin Meat Market-Howells, Great Plains 4-H Club and Eric Goodrich with Nebraska Farm Bureau–Schuyler.
Nebraska Extension also extends its appreciation to the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art and the Butler County 4-H Council for their partnership and collaboration in making this unique educational experience available to local youth.
