The winter sports season got underway for David City, Aquinas, East Butler and Shelby-Rising City this past week.

Wrestling Roundup
Aquinas picked up where they left off, finishing fourth at the Bennington Invite behind three teams in largest classes.
The Monarchs sent three wrestlers to the finals with Jaydyn Schommer capturing the only first place finish.
Schommer beat Elkhorn South’s Suby Manzitto 8-2 in the finals of the 106-pound bracket to grab his gold medal.
Tristan Davis (113), after two tech falls to begin the tournament, lost 11-4 to Columbus’s Carter Booze in the finals.
Symon Kastl (144) grabbed two pins and a tech fall in his first three matches of the day before falling to Brodee Scobee of Bennington in his finals match.

Aquinas also got team points from Landon Pohl’s third place finish at 175 pounds and Seth Hlavac’s and Logan Vanderberg’s fourth place finishes at 126 and 150 pounds, respectively.
East Butler put on a strong showing at the Lakeview Invite putting three wrestlers in the finals and claiming a fourth place team finish.
The Tigers individual champs at the tournament included Drake Sova (113) and Keigan Kocian (126).
Sova went 2-0 winning his semifinals match with a second period pin before taking home the gold medal on a medical forfeit by teammate Matt Klement.
Kocian needed four wins to grab his medal, recording three pins and a 15-9 decision to get the job done.
Dane Sova (150) and Michael Kunasek (157) both finished third for East Butler.
Shelby-Rising City also took part in the wrestling festivities in Columbus last Friday with Elijah Fjell claiming the group’s only medal.
Fjell ripped through the 190-pound bracket with two pins and ended the night on a 17-2 tech fall over Arlington’s Tate Johannes.
David City opened the season with a third place finish in the O’Neill Invite behind Hayden Schmit’s title at 138 pounds.
Schmit used a pair of pins, an 8-0 major decision and a 9-2 win over Ralston’s Brody Schmitt in the championship match to walk away with a perfect 4-0 record.
Jesse Divis (190) also reached the finals, but lost an 18-9 major decision to Pierce’s Kyle Kuehler to finish runner-up.
Other medalists included Teagan Rerucha (126) finishing fourth, Manny Venegas (132) taking third and Daren Vodicka (175) and Max Jasper (285) finishing fifth.
Boys Basketball Roundup
David City is still searching for its first win after dropping its first two games of the eyar 35-30 to Centennial and 56-11 to Sandy Creek.
Caelan Olson led the Scouts in scoring in the tough loss to Centennial, which saw the visitors outscore David City 15-6 in the final frame, with 10 points. Diondrae Aerni added nine points for the Scouts.
David City hosts Schuyler at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday then travels to Elmwood-Murdock at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Aquinas got off to a fast start to the season with a 50-38 win over Raymond Central then fell 44-28 to Logan View/Scribner-Snyder.
The Monarchs travel to East Butler Tuesday then come home to host Bergan at 7:30 p.m.
Shelby-Rising City took a pair of similar losses to begin the winter campaign, falling 55-42 to Cross County and 52-43 to Twin River.
The Huskies host Cedar Bluffs Friday for their only action of the week.
Girls Basketball Roundup
David City off to a 1-1 start after beating Centennial 49-39 in their season opener then following it up with a 49-25 loss to Sandy Creek.
Addison Rands and Kambri Andel led the Scouts in scoring against Centennial, both posting 13 points. Sadie Nicolas joined the pair in double-figures with 10 points.
The Scouts host Schuyler at 6 p.m. Thursday then travel to Elmwood-Murdock at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Aquinas rebounded from a season-opening loss to Raymond Central, 53-46, to pick up a 53-47 win over Logan View/Scribner-Snyder.
The Monarchs travel to East Butler at 6 p.m. Tuesday before returning home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday to host Bergan.
East Butler will be coming into their match-up with Aquinas with a 1-0 record after beating Cedar Bluffs on the road to start the year.
Marget Pekarek paced the Tigers with 16 points, seven rebounds, seven blocks and five steals. Lillie Kriz added 11 points and Blaire Glasshoff chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
East Butler hosts Osceola at 6 p.m. Thursday and travels to Twin River at 6 p.m. Friday to cap their week of action.
Shelby-Rising City is off to a 1-1 start following a 48-26 win over Twin River Saturday.
